Why is this a good idea?

Thought we should say why Flaming Desks is a good idea…

Easy reason; there are lots of people, particularly in the media type sector, who operate on their own, but need desks in central areas. Flaming Desks sorts them right out.

Slightly more subtle reason; offering a desk is good for your business. I do it a lot, because I want Nonsense to be a place where lots of talented people are milling around, so the team can absorb some of their knowledge, and so that those people will tell everyone how nice we are. Flaming Desks will do that too.

(In fact, it’ll actually make that less weird - I’m forever offering our spare desk to people I’ve only just met, that I’ve found impressive. I can tell they think I’m a bit, well, forward. But if they knew it was a more general open offer, I think they’d actually be more likely to say yes!)

pint?

pint?

OK, so Dave and I had been to some networking type thing and, as fortune would have it, ended up in the pub, chatting.

Dave’s company, White October is based in Oxford, but he lives in London doing new biz stuff. Often, Dave uses cafes to work from, and uses flexible meeting spaces occasionally, because he has no London premises. As he’s telling me all this, I kindly offer that he can use the spare desk at Nonsense whenever he likes.

See, at Nonsense, we pretty much always have at least one spare desk, because we’re planning on growing and took up a lease on a rather roomy place!

And then… EUREKA! One of us (and I like to think it was me, but am sure Dave will disagree) said “why isn’t there a service for putting people like you in touch with people like me?”.
And so Flaming Desks was born. Well, conceived at any rate. We’ve still got to make it!

We thought that collaborating on a blog about it would help get it done, and provide something for all you early birds out there to read while we sort the whole thing out. This is that blog.
